PULL versus PUSH Websites

From "Website Redesign"

Go to the project

PULL: Most websites just dispense information to those who happen to be drawn (pulled) to it to get answers. Examples:

rexburg.org

rexburgarts.org

rexburgrapids.com

tetonlakesgc.com / golfrexburg.com

PUSH: Engage Rexburg is an example of a website designed to receive input from citizens. The city pushes information and questions to citizens by email, which links them to topics on engage.rexburg.org, where they can react and comment back to the city.

But to be effective, Engage Rexburg needs a regular and continuous flow of information pushed out to citizens to involve them in both the routine and the controversial aspects of city governance. Citizen comments after an event or about a pending decision can be very helpful to city decision makers.

I agree with Wanless. I believe that the city could work harder to inform citizens about Engage Rexburg. Maybe placing information in the monthly newsletter on a regular basis would help.

We are glad that you enjoy the Engage Rexburg platform. We find value in the possibilities that lie here, but we struggle with gaining a credible audience on this forum. After multiple project PUSHES, many of which we thought would drive a lot of activity, the City still only has about 300 Rexburg residents signed up here [other participants have noted they live outside of the City]. While the time and effort to manage Engage is worth it to us if we have an active audience, we have yet to find the key [legally] to gaining such insight from our citizens.

@City of Rexburg Please give us a numbers-perspective: How many eligible voters are there among Rexburg residents? How many Rexburg residents actually voted in recent city elections? What is the maximum capacity of the City Hall Council Chambers? How many Rexburg Residents typically participate in public hearings? High participation number? Average Participation number? Low Participation number?

@City of Rexburg To gain an active, "credible audience" on Engage Rexburg: 1. The Engage Rexburg platform should provide citizens with meaningful opportunities to give feedback to the city. 2. There should be a regular and continuous flow of information pushed out to citizens to involve them in both the routine and the controversial aspects of city governance. 3. The city should make a diligent effort to get Rexburg residents signed up for Engage Rexburg so they can receive regular email invitations to share their ideas about "What's Happening in Rexburg." 4. The estimate of audience size for Engage Rexburg needs to recognize that participating citizens are provided an easy way to notify fellow citizens about what’s happening on Engage Rexburg, so their neighbors can also become aware and participate. 5. The city needs to be committed to open and transparent government, wanting its citizens to be informed and willing to receive citizen feedback.
