Community Holidays

From "Community Building"

Go to the project

Should Rexburg be a holiday destination? We would like it to be! With so much of the community coming together to celebrate, we could really make our city shine!

Is there a holiday activity that you would like to see Rexburg put together? What sort of holiday events could help bring the community together? Would such an event make you feel more connected to your city and the community?

If we were to extend our holiday season with markets, entertainment, activities, and more that last a longer period of time (say 2-3 months,) would you be interested in attending on multiple occasions? Do you think people would consider traveling to come to these types of events?

What ideas do you have that might make help this successful? How could you contribute?

Share your ideas with us to see if this is a good option for us to pursue in the future!

If you like this idea or any of the ideas mentioned in the comments below, be sure to give them a like so we know how to invest our time!

I think it would be fun to do a Christmas Tree Lane. A business or organization can decorate a Christmas tree for a fee and then families can come and look at all the decorated trees, have cocoa, treats, and listen to music. All the money can be donated to the Family Crisis Center, Tabernacle revocation, or other places. People can vote for their favorite tree, which would get a prize or something. I think it would make for a fun family/community tradition to go see and/or participate in.

In my old area I lived in there was a big mum flower festival in the fall. We could also do festivals celebrating things that pertain to Idaho and the history of it. Or a spud festival. We do love our potatoes. We could also have a festival learning about the Native American Indian tribes from around here. There is the Fishermen's Breakfast that St. Anthony does. What if the city were to host something like that for the first day of hunting. Back home there were also shrimp festivals and the Big Rock Marlin competition. I know we don't have the ocean but there are a lot of things we do have that the coast don't have.

What if we did a pizza making competition? The owner of righteous slice has become very good at these things and he could be a judge and a resource on how to do some of these things. We could also do Christmas market night. Yes it gets cold here in Rexburg but maybe Friday nights starting the week before Thanksgiving up till the weekend before Christmas for Christmas village market like they do in Europe could be fun. With each week the city finding a different country to focus on giving it the theme of the market.

I am a few years behind on this, but does a local committee still sponsor the International Dance Festival and not the city? To me, it makes sense for the city to take it over again and make it bigger! When done right it can draw in a lot of people both here and in surrounding areas.

Create your own fest! Specifically in late Spring, not much happens in Idaho in late spring. Something like- a CocoaMea Fest (cocoa for me-a). Where all the local venders stores, culinary shops and artists have food competition for best culinary creations, preferably chocolate! And let the evening end in a dance!

Starting something like Christkindlmarket could be a great way to bring the community together and also create a source of revenue for the city if we can draw people from other areas to visit. It could be held as a Christmas in July to provide better weather for travelers. Other fairs like Ribfest or a family friendly Halloween festival can also be fun

Honestly I think an indoor holiday market would be a really good idea something to do inside when it’s cold outside. I guess my question is what is unique to Rexburg? What event would that be or holiday that the whole community gets to participate in?
